Odisha, known as the land of Lord Jagannath ("Lord of the Universe"), is home to the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri. The temple is designed so that no shadow of the temple touches the ground at any time of the day, a remarkable architectural feat. Another distinctive aspect is the idols of the holy trinity, which are carved from wood instead of stone or metal. These idols are unique, as they are the only deities depicted with human-like attributes, symbolizing mortality. Built in the 12th century AD, the temple is the spiritual center of the Jagannath cult and attracts pilgrims from around the world year-round.
The Sun Temple at Konark is a masterpiece of Odisha’s temple architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 12th century by King Narasimha Deva I, it is dedicated to the Sun God and represents over 700 years of architectural evolution. Despite its current ruinous state, the temple’s grandeur in symmetry, structure, and detailed carvings continues to awe visitors. The temple was designed to resemble a chariot drawn by seven horses and featuring twenty-four intricately carved wheels. These wheels, known as the Konark Chakra, are not just decorative; their spokes can be used to tell the time based on the sun’s shadow. Additionally, the carvings represent daily life activities at different times of the day.
